We built MyPIPApp so you can use it comfortably even on high-pain, high-fatigue, or brain-fog days. You can make the text bigger, switch on high-contrast colours, use a reading ruler, navigate with a keyboard or screen reader, and save your work automatically at every step.

MyPIPApp (mypipapp.co.uk) is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, sensory impairments, and neurodivergence. We design and test our independent self-help tools against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standard, alongside enhanced cognitive and visual ergonomics.

1. Compliance Status & How Accessible This Website Is

This website is designed to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 Level AA standard. You should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels, line spacing, and font families using our built-in Accessibility Toolbar or your browser settings.
  • Scale text up to 200% without text spilling off the screen or overlapping controls.
  • Navigate the entire site using only a keyboard, switch device, or voice-control software with a clear 3px solid focus ring.
  • Listen to every page and form using a screen reader (including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack).
  • Pause at any time without losing your work, thanks to automatic draft saving and no session time-out traps on form pages.

2. Measures to Support Accessibility

MyPIPApp takes the following technical and cognitive-ergonomic measures across our claim guidance platform:

  • High-Contrast & Low-Glare Themes: Warm off-white and dark palettes to reduce visual fatigue, plus a dedicated High-Contrast mode (pure black background with high-visibility yellow focus indicators exceeding 19:1 contrast).
  • Universal 3px Solid Focus Ring: Complete keyboard navigation support, logical focus order, prominent 3px solid focus rings (#2563EB in standard themes and #FFFF00 in High-Contrast mode), and a Skip to Main Content link.
  • Minimum 48×48px Touch Targets: Interactive buttons, form controls, and navigation links maintain at least a 48×48 CSS pixel hit area to support users experiencing hand tremors, joint pain, or fine-motor difficulties.
  • Persistent Accessibility Toolbar: Our global toolbar (src/contexts/accessibility-context.tsx) provides 1-tap controls for font resizing, High-Contrast mode, dyslexia-friendly typography (Atkinson Hyperlegible / OpenDyslexic), reduced motion, wide text spacing, a focus reading strip, and Quick Exit.
  • Screen Reader & Modal Semantics: Semantic HTML5 landmarks, WAI-ARIA 1.2 attributes, accessible modal focus trapping with Escape-key dismissal, and polite live-region validation announcements (role="alert" aria-live="polite").
  • Cognitive Ergonomics: Plain British English copy (reading age 9–11), 1-tap Regulation 4(2A) sentence starter chips (Safely, Acceptably, Repeatedly, Reasonable time), 15-minute pacing reminders, and automatic draft persistence.
  • Clean A4 Print Isolation: Printed and exported PIP2/SSCS1 summaries automatically reset to clean 11pt black-on-white typography so reading overlays or dark themes never obscure printed pages.

3. Known Limitations & Third-Party Content

While we work continuously to maintain full accessibility across all first-party pages, some third-party or user-supplied items may have limitations:

  • User-Uploaded Medical Evidence: Scanned hospital letters, GP printouts, or photographs uploaded by you into your Evidence Vault remain in their original PDF/JPEG/PNG format. However, our AI evidence tools can help you extract and summarise key text into accessible plain English.
  • External Government Links: Links to official GOV.UK or legislation.gov.uk pages open external websites governed by their own accessibility statements.

4. Technical Specifications & Testing

Accessibility of MyPIPApp relies on HTML5, WAI-ARIA 1.2, CSS3, and JavaScript (React 19 / Next.js). This statement was prepared and verified using automated WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility suites (Playwright and axe-core), manual keyboard-only tab order audits, touch-target geometry verification at desktop (1280×800) and mobile (375×812) viewports, and High-Contrast visual checks.

5. DWP Independence & Official Alternative Formats

MyPIPApp is an independent self-help service and is not part of, or endorsed by, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HMCTS, or the NHS. Accessibility settings changed on MyPIPApp apply only to your MyPIPApp workspace and do not notify the DWP of your communication needs.
